Injury Education - Concussions
The following information was provided to GPHA by a concerned parent - Mickey Shield.

The board and coaches are concerned first and foremost with the health of our althletes. The GPHA board is working to establish a written policy regarding concussions. In the mean time, here is some important information on this serious issue. It will be important for coaches AND parents to adhere to the motto, "WHEN IN DOUBT, SIT THEM OUT!"

1. CDC Educational Video: Heads Up Concussion in High School Sports (11 minutes)
This is a video about a high school football player who suffered long term brain damage after playing with a concussion and getting hit a second time. It makes a clear and compelling case for importance of treating concussion symptoms seriously and for encouraging athletes to report, rather than hide, their concussion symptoms.

This is an excellent educational video that not only discusses the dangers of concussion in youth sports, but gives an excellent overview of the computerized online cognitive functioning assessment (ImPACT) test now commonly being used to diagnose and treat athletic concussions.

Take the Baseline ImPACT Test Online (valid for athletes 12 and over - only $10 at HFHS Website) - http://www.henryford.com/body. cfm?id=47019 Any athlete 12 and over can take the baseline ImPACT test for a nominal fee directly through the HFHS website. The test results are stored in an online database that Henry Ford neuropsychologists can access in the event you sustain a head injury or concussion.
